Hey Rob!

I've been using resharper with C# for quite a while now. No more VB.NET for me. :) The best part I like about my resharper setup is that I have it liked to stylecop through the resharper stylecop addin. It's just awesome, try it out! I ran my code through ndepend and I have 95% of the production (non test assemblies) code documented!! It underlines any methods where the comment is not setup right and gives some facility to format them easily... It's worth every penny... wait, that add-in is free... :)

Well, the way I came to identify the behavior I didn't like was by trying to find records where the last character was a space. Initially I had forgotten about the RIGHT function. So I started by trying to find the last character by doing a SUBSTRING( column, LEN(column)-1, 1) [dumb, I know]. However because the length was wrong (IMO) I didn't get the correct result. Ultimately I got my answer using the RIGHT function.

However, I still believe if the variable was given 6 characters a length of that variable should reflect all 6 characters. At the very least I think the function should be consistent. If it's going to ignore trailing white space it should ignore leading white space.

To me, it's just that you're dealing with unclear data. In terms of SQL, it is documented that the len function is expected to work the way it works here:

It seems like you like something like:

Declare @value varchar(10)
Set @value = ' 123 '
select Len(ltrim(@value))

for the type of data you're dealing with...
